My charity

Background

Pens for Kids Denmark has made this page for me - because:

- I am a good representative for the many young men from the Masese 3 slum in Jinja, Uganda - who have had to stop their studies due to lack of funds.

- I am a photographer with a good command of the English language - and can thus document the conditions in the slum and the destiny of any donated items.

What I do

My goal is to help my friends and neighbors in the slum to a better life.

Via this website I hope to attract donors, who are willing to send us things we need in our daily life - to stay healthy and to attend school.

Many of the kids in my neighborhood lack shoes, and the roads in the slum are littered with sharp objects, infected with all kinds of bacteria and dirt. Shoes are also needed to protect their feet against Jiggers (Chigoe Flea), which is a big problem in Uganda.

Some of the kids need glasses, writing utensils, notebooks, school bag etc. to enable them to go to school - and others need every-day clothes as well as school uniforms.

Most of the kids here have one or more medical problems, like diarrhoea, Malaria, Jiggers, amoebic dysentery, flood blindness and other conditions associated with contaminated food and water, poor hygiene and lack of shoes, insecticides or mosquito nets.

How I do it

When I asked Pens for Kids Denmark to help the kids in my neighborhood, the manager suggested that I started this unofficial charity - since starting an official charity involves a lot of paperwork and paying a lot of money to officials in government offices.

To stay on the right side of the law, I thus don't arrange public fundraising events. I only ask well-wishers to donate obsolete or second-hand items, and to help us with a little cash to compensate the costs associated with collecting and distributing donated items and documenting their faith.

In Uganda it costs 190.000 UGX (app. 55 US$) per year to rent a post box, and since a bus ticket is needed from time to time - I can not do this work without a little cash.

I have invested the 55 US$ needed to rent a post box until April 2022, and hope that donations from welwishers will cover the charge for next year, so that I can continue this charity project.

What donors get back

To document that everything is legitimate, and that donated items end up in the hands intended, I take photos of the kids holding the donated items, and send them back to the donor.

If a business wants to make a substantial donation - e.g. as part of a Corporate Social Responsibility project - I can even arrange to have some pictures made, where kids hold a sign thanking the donor in question. This does however require a little preparation - and cooperation with Pens for Kids Denmark - so a little patience is needed.

Thank you donor !

Pens for Kids Denmark has helped me to get a postal address and to do some marketing via this website and my Facebook page, and on June 10th 2021 I received a package of shoes and shirts from a donor in Scotland who wishes to be anonymous. The package contained 5 pairs of shoes and 3 shirts - all very clean and in good condition:

The next day I handed out the donated items to underprivileged kids in my neighborhood. The kids were very excitet about their new belongings - they are not used to get anything for free ! Here they are showing off their new shoes and shirts ðŸ™‚

In this picture they are holding a "Thank you donor" sign.

To make signs with your company's logo on them, we need the help of Pens for Kids Denmark - so in such cases more time is needed to produce materials for your CSR program.

Selfie with the kids who "won the lottery" this time.

Thanks to the abovementioned donors in Denmark and Scotland, 5 kids now have shoes to protect their feet from Jiggers and injuries / infections, and 3 got nice new clean shirts.

There are however many more kids in my neighborhood who need a helping hand - so please follow the examples set by these donors, and send me your obsolete clothes, shoes, eye glasses, stationery etc. to help these kids get a decent start in life.

The address is: Joseph Loling, P.O.Box 2057 Jinja, Uganda.
