I am Loling Joseph, born 04-03-1998 to the family of Achia Elia and Naduk Perendetato - a family of six(fourth) in Napak district - the newly created district in the Karamoja region.
I was brought by my elder brother to Jinja in 2009, to stay
with our uncle, Otim John, who used to work in Jinja Central market.
I was taken to Masese-co-primary school for my primary education, where I completed my primary leaving Examination (P.L.E). I went to Jinja senior secondary school, Buzaaya secondary
school, Kamuli district, where I completed both O and A level.
During my course of study I was aiming at becoming a "chemist", but unfortunately I lost my uncle on 3. September, 2017. He died in an accident, after been knocked down by a taxi, on his
way home from town to Bugembe - where my brother and I lived with him. He was then rushed to Mulago National Hospital, where he passed away. Because he was the one responsible for my fees, I could not go any further in studies. Instead we had to raise his
kids. He was a father to six - and the situation was so overwhelming.
I could not really manage the situation. I incurred high difficulties in life to my experience, that I will not forget myself and many other things.
We decided to shift to
Masese 3 - a slum area dominantly known for Karamojongs located at the outskirts of Jinja City, where our fellow tribesmen live. The children are nursed by our married cousin sister - a mother to three children, and others stay with their mum at the village.
Honestly speaking the situation in the slum is tough. Amidst of everything, few kids go to school, but the greatest percentage of the young generation of about 5 - 16 do not attend school because of a variety of reasons, which include among
others, lack of fees, the parents themselves are less concerned - not because they want, but because of high rate of poverty and alcoholism, due to the cheap drinks that's made around the community, starvation, poor facilities like housing, latrines and bathing
shelters and other related problems which are associated with living in the slum.
